Did you know …

that I have a naval piercing

and a tattoo?

The piercing was done just for the heck of it. Seriously. I did it for fun and I thought it looks pretty (even though I’d never wear tops short enough to show it off).

As for the tattoo … well I have toyed with the idea of getting a tattoo for many years but I only finally got one in April 08 when I mustered enough courage to go through with it. More importantly, it took me a long time to decide on the design and to find a really nice one. And there is also the issue of finding an artist I can trust. So why lotus? Firstly, I have a personal preference for oriental designs. Secondly, I think the lotus is beautiful. Lastly, I like what the lotus symbolizes and represents. A lotus grows from the bottom of a muddy pond and eventually emerges from the surface into sunlight. Despite its muddy surroundings, it rises above all through strength and remains pure. To some, a lotus is also a symbol of peace and tranquility. By getting a tattoo of a lotus, I hope to be strong and resilient, to not be easily influenced by my surroundings, and to obtain inner peace even during bad times. I had the waves added on purpose as a contrast to the lotus. A life that is always smooth sailing would be too dull for my liking. I believe that life should be interesting, and it is not always a bad thing to have a mixture of ups and downs. Afterall, what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger. So having the waves in the tattoo is a sign that I welcome challenges and excitement in my life.

And now for the answer to the question which I get very often – “Was it very painful to get inked?”. The answer is no. I did it on my right lower back (the fleshy part) so it honestly did not hurt very much. I can assure you that it was completely bearable, perhaps once or twice you’d feel this sudden sharp stinging pain but other than it, the whole process didn’t hurt all that much. You can take my word for it because I have an incredibly low pain threshold.

If anyone is keen to get inked and want a referral, drop me an email or something and I can tell you where I did mine and who is my artist.

Now the question is, should I get a second tattoo? Tempting!
