iPad-ed

I am now a cool person because I have an iPod, an iPhone and the iPad!! Wahahahahaha! Okay I don’t think it is all that cool because I pretty much only know how to utilize the most basic functions of each gadget. The superior technology and coolness of the thousand and one apps are completely wasted on me. The truth is, I’d be happy with any mp3 player that works and a phone that lets me make calls, text people, store phone numbers and act as an alarm clock pretty much serves 100% of my phone needs. As for the iPad, well if someone invents a laptop that is about that size and weight, I’d be happy to trade the iPad in for that.

Getting these Apple products was kind of triggered by sheer convenience. I don’t know about the latest technology or the newest gadgets in the market. Everyone talks about Apple products and hence I know about them. If they serve my purpose at an affordable price, why would I bother researching to see if there is an even better one in the market? Frankly, all those memory size and speed and whatever specs which people talk about, they are all gibberish to me. I can only understand these specs if translated into something I am more familiar with, like if the iPod can store 2-300 songs, I know for a fact that I will have no complaints. Telling me it is how many Gigs means nothing to me at all.

Despite not knowing how to fully appreciate the awesome-ness of the Apple products like the hardcore fans, I must say that these gadgets are fun AND functional. And the fact is, I think they look nice (which is highly important to me when it comes to gadgets since I know nuts about the specifications and other techy stuff like that!).

So yes, while I am not fully utilizing my gadgets to their best potential, I am definitely a happy consumer.

Every now and then, I jump out of my anti-social shell and attempt to be a normal person with a healthy active social life.

Thursday: dinner with Mirek at Pizza Capers after work. A relatively new pizza joint near office & home, food was pretty good and definitely satisfying for 2 very hungry people after a busy day at work.

Friday: finished work late and had dinner with Bryan and Neil at Lenas. I never even noticed that this casual dining place existed in Bugis. We shared this huge platter with buffalo wings, grilled chicken, fried mushrooms etc. I enjoyed the platter even though it wasn’t much to rave about, but it feels quite good indulging in a bunch of fried stuff once in a while. The dessert (blueberry pancakes with ice cream) was kind of disappointing though. Went for drinks at Caesar’s (do not bother going there. I can’t understand why the business is so good in all honesty.) with Bryan while Neil disappeared back to his hotel room and never reappeared. Joined later by Shawn and it was time to leave when they started playing “Nobody” which both guys found unacceptable. In a moment of madness, I decided to join them for more partying and I figured that it was about time I check out the infamous Orchard Towers. So off we went to the building where whoring, drinking, dancing and sleazing take place across multiple levels of clubs and pubs. It was definitely an eye opener for me. Lady boys, Thai girls, Filippino girls, Russian pole dancers who do not dance but merely stand around the poles with sulky faces, scary looking girls from unidentified third world countries etc. Basically, ALL kinds of girls. I can see why Orchard Towers is the haven for the white boys. I don’t think I have ever seen so many white boys AND third world countries girls in one single building before. Crazy stuff. But it was a fun night, we had drinks, we danced, we stared at girls with zero discretion and laughed at the scary looking ones … it was a good night. I am not sure that I’d want to go back there anytime soon, but I guess with the right company, it can be quite fun …. in a cheesy sort of way.

Sat: woke up late and spent most of the day at home, did my 80min run in the evening, then headed down to Fi’s new place in a far far away place called West Coast to hang out and chill with the ex-Velvet gang. Discovered how behind times I am with regards to what people are watching on TV and totally loved Iron Chef America. Soooooooo good! Now I regret cancelling the cable subscription!

So I spent most of my day in bed watching stuff online and being a total lazybum. And for dinner, I got the yummy chicken taco salad from Margaritas. I always call and order before walking out 20min later to collect my food. And because I always order the same thing, this evening when I called and said ‘Hi I wanna order the chicken taco salad takeaway’ and the person on the other end of the line said ‘okay! and no guacamole right?’. They even know my order now, and greet me with such cheery friendliness when I go and pick up my order in shorts and singlet.

I was having a fried chicken craving earlier and came so close to having that craving satisfied. Until someone’s evil boss decided that he should work late on a public holiday! Grrrrrrr!!! You owe me a fried chicken feast now!!!!!!

I think we all played Lego at some point in our childhood, and for some people it remains a hobby well into their adulthood. I loved Lego when I was a child and I remember having tons of them. A not so good memory I have pertaining to Lego is how much it hurts when you need to pull out a really flat piece of Lego from the base board (which is also flat). I remember how much the pieces would bite into the tip of my fingers trying to pull apart 2 really flat pieces. And today, I got to know that there is actually a tool for that. It is called a Brick Separator. So my poor fingers suffered for nothing all those years!

Just another random piece of information which is probably useless to most people (unless they are Lego fanatics, but then that would mean they probably already know about this awesome tool).

Newly (self)discovered weird behavior

So, I just discovered something about myself, and thinking back, I have been doing it for the longest time, I just don’t know why I never really realized it. I have this hugeass TV in my room which I don’t use and instead rely on my trusty laptop to do all kinds of serials-chasing and movie-marathons. I discovered, approximately 2min ago, that whenever I am watching something on my laptop (which I mostly do so at my desk, and occassionally in bed) and comes a scene that makes me go ‘awwwwwww’ or tickles me in a girly laughter sort of way, I promptly hit the ‘pause’ button and I grab my fat pillow and roll around in my bed for a bit taking in the effect of the scene while inhaling the wonderful smell of my pillow. For all of 3 seconds and then I hop back into my chair and continue watching whatever I was watching. Except for now where I have taken a few minutes to post this entry instead.

That is totally weird right?

Ok whatever, back to my movie.

Mind working overtime …

I couldn’t sleep last night and ended up going to bed only at three thirty in the morning. And even though I slept in late, I still feel tired. The fatigue is making me feel unmotivated to do anything. But at the same time, my mind is going crazy thinking of a million and one things. And the conclusion? I feel even more drained. Crap.

I love mornings. Not just because breakfast is my favourite meal of the day. But because mornings are hopeful.

There are 2 ways of waking up in the morning.

The first is to wake up full of anticipation that a day of wonderful possibilities lie ahead. You open your eyes and it is a brand new day, everything starts from zero, and it is a fresh beginning. The bad stuff that happened yesterday is officially history. You can dwell on it, or you can focus on how today is going to be so much more brilliant than yesterday. You get to start over because yesterday is gone. Yesterday’s mistakes are today’s wisdom. It is now within your control, it is now an option to make today so damn good you don’t even remember why yesterday sucked.

On the other hand, you can wake up wondering if today is going to be just as bad or even worse than yesterday. You can let the first waking thought be “I can’t do this”, and you can let yesterday’s failures tell you why you don’t deserve a good day. You can remember and replay every disappointment, every hurtful moment, every second of anger you felt yesterday and spend today re-living the pain all over again.

Do you want to be dark & gloomy, or do you want to be bright & sunny?

The beauty of mornings is that you get to choose.

You get a new beginning, you get to say “let’s do this again because I am going to rock it this time”.

It is life’s natural ‘Refresh’ button.

Feeling good

Today, I did something I haven’t done in a long time. I left office at 6pm on the dot. I went to ECP for a run and it was a really good run. I felt strong throughout the 70min, like I could keep running forever. It felt awesome. Totally worth leaving the office on time for!

Last night, I sent an email to someone as a peace offering. I did it because I wanted to, and also because it felt like the right thing to do. I like confronting things when I feel that something is off and it does not sit well with some people. There are some who appreciate it when I speak up, but there are others who do not like having things laid out so clearly on the table. Perhaps I am too dense to realize what is appropriate for an open discussion, and what is better left unsaid. I can be harsh and critical in things I say, but in my mind, I am logical. So if I tell someone ‘you are a jerk’, I wouldn’t stop at that. I’d tell him why I say he is a jerk. And if he is able to present a different perspective as to why whatever he did does not make him a jerk, I will be more than happy to listen, and maybe even take back what I said if his explanation makes sense. And at the end of the day, we can even agree to disagree because there isn’t always a right or wrong. People can have differing views and as long as we are open minded enough to accept that there are more than one way of looking at things, there is no reason why we can’t get along. Anyway, back to the email I sent … I am not sure if it did any good, or if it even meant anything to the recipient. It was most definitely not littered with ‘sorry’s from the start to the end, but it was sincere and honest. If it turns out to be a complete waste of effort, then I guess my peace offering was just not good enough. And I suppose if it does come to that, then there really isn’t much left that I can do or say. We’ll see.

On the work front, I am not looking forward to a client meeting on Thursday morning. I only knew that I have to attend this afternoon, and I was definitely not jumping for joy. And a couple of hours later, I am dreading it even more. It would be entirely inappropriate and unprofessional of me to blog the details, and I certainly do not want to risk getting into trouble. So I should probably shut up right about now!
